In-House Legal Counsel
Belfast | Hybrid Working | Full-Time
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced construction lawyer to join a successful and growing organisation in a standalone in-house legal role.
This is a particularly interesting opportunity for a solicitor with a strong construction background who is looking to move in-house and take ownership of the legal function, working closely with the wider business and reporting directly to the Board.
The role is predominantly non-contentious, with a strong focus on construction contracts and supporting the business throughout the lifecycle of its projects.
The Role
As the sole in-house legal professional, you will have significant autonomy and visibility across the organisation, providing pragmatic and commercially focused legal advice to the Board and wider senior management team.
Your work will include:
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating construction and commercial contracts
- Advising on JCT, NEC and other standard-form construction contracts
- Supporting projects from tender and procurement through to completion
- Advising on contractual risk, obligations and project delivery
- Reviewing and negotiating consultant, subcontractor and supplier agreements
- Providing day-to-day commercial and contractual advice to the business
- Working closely with project, commercial and senior management teams
- Providing legal and contractual guidance directly to the Board
- Identifying and managing legal and contractual risk
- Instructing and managing external legal advisers where required
- Developing and maintaining appropriate legal processes and documentation
While the role is predominantly non-contentious, there will be some exposure to contentious matters, giving you the opportunity to work across a broad and varied range of issues.
About You
We are looking for a solicitor with a strong construction and commercial contracts background, ideally gained within a construction, engineering, development or similarly project-led environment.
You will ideally have:
- A recognised legal qualification with solid post-qualification experience
- Strong experience advising on construction contracts
- Good working knowledge of JCT and NEC
- Experience negotiating and drafting commercial agreements
- A practical understanding of construction projects and contractual risk
- Excellent commercial judgement and the ability to provide clear, pragmatic advice
- Confidence advising and communicating with Board-level stakeholders
- The ability to operate autonomously and take full ownership of the legal function
Why This Role?
This is far more than a traditional in-house legal position. As the standalone legal specialist, you will have genuine ownership of the legal function, direct access to the Board and the opportunity to influence commercial decision-making across the organisation.
You’ll be exposed to interesting, high-value and varied projects, working closely with senior decision-makers and becoming a key strategic adviser to the business. With hybrid working, significant autonomy and the opportunity to build and shape the in-house legal function, this is an excellent move for a construction solicitor looking for something different.
If you’re a construction lawyer looking for a role where you can have real influence, visibility and autonomy, we’d be keen to hear from you.
