Speech and Language Job Description

  • Speciality – Speech and Language Therapy- EHCP / Selective Mutism
  • Location -Lincolnshire
  • Start date -ASAP
  • Contract Length -Ongoing
  • Pay Rates :£150 persession
  • Hours: Approx. 50 hours per year
  • We are looking for an experienced Speech & Language Therapist to provide specialist EHCP provision for a young person with selective mutism and complex communication needs.
  • The young person is currently not attending school, so sessions will initially be delivered around their current arrangements. This is a flexible, low-hours locum opportunity that could work well alongside an existing role or caseload.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver one 45-minute individual SLT session per week.
  • Develop and maintain accessible multimodal communication.
  • Support self-advocacy, communication around health and safety, and participation in education.
  • Use a low-pressure communication approach, without placing expectations on the young person to use spoken language.
  • Provide termly training and consultation to key education staff.
  • Support staff with:
  • Selective mutism
  • Reducing communication pressure
  • Recognising non-speaking communication
  • Multimodal communication strategies
  • Self-advocacy
  • Adapting classroom communication demands
  • Liaise with the young person’s family, education team and other professionals to ensure consistency across settings.
  • Complete an annual formal SLT reassessment, using appropriately adapted assessment methods that do not rely solely on verbal responses.
  • Produce an annual written SLT review report, including progress, current needs and recommendations for EHCP provision/outcomes.
  • Attend the young person’s Annual Review meeting.
  • Review provision earlier where there is a significant change in communication, placement, educational access or participation.
  • Annual Hours
  • Approximately 50 hours per year, comprising:
  • ” 39 hours – direct SLT intervention
  • ” 6 hours – staff training and consultation
  • ” 3 hours – annual reassessment
  • ” 1 hour – annual written review report
  • ” 1 hour – Annual Review attendance

Requirements

  • Qualified Speech & Language Therapist
  • HCPC registration
  • Strong paediatric / education experience
  • Experience supporting selective mutism highly desirable
  • Knowledge of multimodal and non-speaking communication approaches
  • Experience working with EHCPs and educational settings
  • Confident working autonomously and liaising with families and multidisciplinary teams
  • Able to travel to Horncastle for face-to-face provision
