Job summary

Band 3 Health Care Support worker within the surgical Ward 23 Surgery / Urology. The band 3 Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) is a vital part of the multi-disciplinary team within the Surgical Group, providing high quality, compassionate and efficient care to patients on a Surgical Ward with a wide range of acute and emergency surgical conditions. Working under the supervision of registered nurses, the post holder will be expected to assist in the delivery of patient care, support with the monitoring of observations, support clinical procedures and maintain a safe and clean environment. The role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to manage workload and work under pressure, with a commitment to upholding the Trusts values and standards of care. Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

The HCSW will be responsible for undertaking enhanced clinical skills appropriate to a band 3 level such as performing ECG’s, venepuncture, wound care, stoma care, patient observations, BMs, and bladder scans. The post holder will also provide support to other HCSW’s on duty and provide reassurance to patients and relatives during what can often be a distressing time. They will be expected to show an interest in wider areas of healthcare and actively support with link roles and representation of the clinical area.

Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for own actions, ensuring all patient interactions/observations are communicated to trained staff.
  • Show dignity and respect in dealings with patients, staff and visitors.
  • Undertake agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks following training, ensuring referral to the appropriate trained staff as appropriate.
  • Organise own daily workload e.g. use and cleaning of identified medical and non-medical equipment (beds, hoists etc.).
  • Assist with personal patient care e.g. feeding and toileting.
  • Support less experienced members of staff in their orientation to the ward and role
  • Utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient data
  • Support the team in expected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need
  • Support staff and patients exposed to difficult situations arising in the clinical area e.g. after receipt of bad news or following an unexpected event
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
  • Ensure daily cleaning checks are completed and cubicles ready for use.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ Level 3 in care or willing to working towards
  • Demonstrate basic numeracy and literacy skills

Experience

Essential

  • Recent clinical experience working within a Surgical Ward.
  • Experience of supporting a small team.
  • Completed Care Certificate

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of Trust Policy and Procedure

Desirable

  • An understanding of current issues relating to the NHS.
