Overview

In this role you will provide expert legal support to BT’s Public Sector and business teams, helping secure complex contracts and navigate regulatory issues. You’ll work across Defence, Government, Local Councils and Health sectors, partnering with senior lawyers to balance risk and commercial opportunity. You’ll lead on medium-complexity bids, manage contractual issues, and guide governance and compliance practices. The position sits within the Legal team to enable growth and strategic initiatives across UK Business. This is a pivotal, transformation-minded opportunity in a high-impact public sector context.

Responsibilities

  • Lead legal support on medium-complexity bids with senior lawyers on high-value deals
  • Provide clear, pragmatic legal advice to Sales & Commercial teams balancing risk and opportunity
  • Draft, negotiate and execute complex contracts (customer, supplier, partnership)
  • Manage in-life contractual issues, disputes, and change controls
  • Navigate supply chains and negotiate terms with subcontractors and suppliers
  • Advise on regulatory and interpretation matters across new and ongoing initiatives
  • Influence deal strategy with bid and commercial leads
  • Manage external counsel to ensure value and quality
  • Embed governance, compliance, and risk management best practices
  • Drive legal and commercial awareness to improve decision-making across Enterprise
  • Collaborate with Legal, Company Secretariat, and other business units
  • Build stakeholder relationships to align legal support with growth objectives

Key requirements

  • Qualified Lawyer (NQ upwards) or proven relevant experience
  • Self-motivated, independent with team participation
  • Eligible to obtain DV clearance (UK citizenship and 10+ years UK residence)
