Overview

As a Regional Manager, you will lead the regional management team to translate UNISON’s priorities into effective action for branches and members. You’ll shape and deliver strategic and operational plans, oversee staff and resources, and boost the union’s public profile and external influence. You will drive campaigning efforts, support local organisation, and monitor performance to ensure service delivery aligns with the region’s aims. This role offers the chance to influence policy, negotiate effectively, and operate across a broad regional landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop staff, including Regional Organisers, and manage performance and change
  • Oversee resources and activities to implement regional priorities
  • Translate UNISON’s priorities into action across the region
  • Strengthen UNISON’s public profile and external influence
  • Develop local organisation and support campaigning
  • Hold strategic responsibility for designated work areas, with performance standards and monitoring
  • Ensure the region delivers effective services to branches and members
  • Travel within the Northern region and to other regions for training, meetings or other purposes

Key requirements

  • Experience of strategic planning and operational management
  • Proven experience in managing and developing staff and leading change
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence internally and externally
  • Experience negotiating at a high level and providing effective advocacy
  • Experience managing projects, budgets and resources and making data-driven decisions
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills, with ability to communicate complex issues and engage with media
  • Experience working in a corporate management structure and with lay membership
  • Knowledge of employment law and understanding of trade unions and their environment
  • Commitment to equality and UNISON’s aims and objectives
  • Knowledge of ICT packages, including Microsoft Office suite
