Overview

In this role, you will service, repair and install domestic gas systems across Hackney council properties, ensuring safe, reliable heating and hot water. You will work on planned, reactive and cyclical gas tasks as part of Hackney Housing, collaborating with colleagues to maintain high service standards. The role combines hands-on technical work with safety compliance and resident-facing service, contributing to a reliable heating service for residents. You will engage in professional problem solving, on-site diagnostics and timely documentation, with opportunities to mentor others and uphold safety culture.

Responsibilities

  • Service, repair, maintain and install domestic gas appliances, boilers, heating and hot water systems
  • Carry out annual gas servicing in line with the Gas Servicing Programme
  • Diagnose and repair boilers, pumps, motorised valves, radiators, controls and associated pipework
  • Install and replace modern boilers, gas fires and wall heaters
  • Carry out power flushing, drain-downs and recommissioning of heating systems
  • Undertake minor plumbing, electrical and finishing works where required
  • Complete landlord gas safety certificates and other required legal documentation
  • Accurately record work completed, materials used and job updates via PDA/IT systems
  • Assess faults, identify the appropriate repair and manage materials required
  • Work safely at height using ladders, scaffolding and mobile towers where necessary
  • Work professionally within residents’ homes, minimising disruption and leaving properties clean and tidy
  • Manage and prioritise allocated work to meet required timescales and quality standards
  • Maintain tools, equipment and the Hackney Housing vehicle to the required standards
  • Support apprentices and less experienced colleagues when required

Key requirements

  • Current ACS Gas qualifications and relevant gas engineering experience
  • Strong experience servicing, repairing and installing domestic gas appliances and heating systems
  • Good fault-finding and diagnostic skills
  • Knowledge of gas safety legislation and safe working practices
  • Experience working in residents’ homes, social housing or a housing repairs environment would be highly beneficial
  • Ability to complete accurate gas certification and electronic job records
  • Good customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to organise and prioritise your own workload
  • Full UK driving licence and ability to use a council vehicle
