Overview

As a Staff Backend Engineer at Wise, you shape the backbone of our KYC and onboarding platform, building scalable, secure services that power verification for millions of customers. You’ll lead technical direction, mentor engineers, and partner with product and design to improve speed, accuracy, and customer experience. You’ll work on a configuration-driven KYC platform and distributed microservices, keeping reliability and compliance at the fore. Responsibilities

• Design and maintain high-performance backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and cloud tech
• Lead initiatives to improve automation, reliability, and performance of verification systems
• Collaborate with product managers to translate requirements into technical solutions
• Mentor junior engineers and perform code reviews
• Drive architectural decisions and technical strategy for verification systems
• Build internal tools to help verification agents work efficiently
• Contribute to engineering culture through knowledge sharing and best practices

Key requirements

• 10+ years of Java 8+ experience, recent Spring framework
• SQL and NoSQL database experience
• Strong distributed, high-throughput system design
• History leading technical initiatives and mentoring engineers
• Security best practices and data protection understanding
• Excellent problem-solving and detail orientation
• Ability to communicate complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
• Experience with financial or KYC verification systems is a plus
