Principal Structural Engineer

Overview

In this Principal Structural Engineer role, you will lead projects and a design team within a respected structural consultancy. You’ll balance hands-on design work with increasingly strategic oversight, mentoring junior engineers and coordinating with contractors, architects, and clients. The position supports significant local schemes—from housing to city centre redevelopments—while guiding teams toward chartered status. It’s an opportunity to shape technical direction and grow into senior management within a collaborative, quality-focused culture.

Responsibilities

• Leading projects and the design team; main point of contact for third parties
• Directing and mentoring junior design team members
• Communicating with contractors, architects, clients; handling queries
• Attending site meetings and overseeing project progress
• Assuming increasing managerial responsibility and steering towards senior management
• Working on a portfolio ranging from bespoke housing to major redevelopments and heritage projects

Key requirements

• Relevant degree in civil or structural engineering
• Experience with industry standard software such as Fastrak, Tedds and Tekla
• Excellent communication skills
• Knowledge of the design process
