Senior Engineer – Highways and Transport

Overview

In this role you will lead the design and delivery of highways and transport schemes, shaping streets and communities. You’ll work within an in-house design team to take projects from feasibility through to handover, collaborating with clients and delivery partners to achieve safe, compliant schemes. The role offers varied technical challenges, development opportunities and a direct impact on everyday journeys. You will guide a small team and contribute to program management and live projects with a strong emphasis on stakeholder communication and quality delivery.

Responsibilities

• Manage design and delivery of highways and transport projects within time, cost, quality, and legislative constraints
• Perform highway engineering design, traffic analysis, option development, and feasibility studies
• Apply UK standards (TSRGD, TSM, MfS2, DMRB) and ensure compliance
• Coordinate and supervise consultants, contractors, and term maintenance contractors with KPI monitoring
• Lead projects through all design stages and handover
• Manage budgets, financial records, contracts, risks, programmes, and quality
• Arrange surveys, site inspections, road safety audits and utility diversions
• Provide technical advice and communication to colleagues, residents, elected Members and stakeholders

Key requirements

• Significant highways and transport engineering experience
• Strong knowledge of UK highway and traffic design standards
• Experience delivering projects from feasibility to handover
• Knowledge of CDM 2015, health and safety, contract administration and site supervision
• Experience in project, financial and contract management with cross-disciplinary coordination
• Proficiency in AutoCAD (including KeyLines/KeySigns); knowledge of Civil 3D, KeyPost or Key Accident is advantageous
