Overview
In this role you apply geotechnical design and numerical modelling to support UK infrastructure and civil projects. You will work within a London-based geotechnical team, collaborating with senior engineers to interpret ground data, develop design solutions, and deliver technical reports. You’ll handle PLAXIS 2D/3D modelling, ground investigations, and earthworks tasks, tackling ground movement, settlement, and soil–structure interaction. This position offers growth through hands-on project delivery and practical engineering challenges.
Responsibilities
- Geotechnical design calculations and assessments for foundations, retaining structures, excavations, slopes and earthworks
- Develop and run numerical modelling using PLAXIS 2D/3D with appropriate soil models, ground conditions, construction stages and loading scenarios
- Interpret modelling outputs (ground movements, settlements, stresses, structural forces, factors of safety) and develop design recommendations
- Prepare calculation notes, modelling summaries and technical design reports
- Review ground investigation data (borehole logs, lab tests, in-situ results) and assist in parameter selection and GIRs/GDRs
- Support earthworks design, slope stability, settlement assessments and ground improvement solutions
- Prepare earthworks specifications and technical documents
- Conduct site attendance, provide on-site geotechnical support, supervise or monitor investigations, and liaise with contractors and multidisciplinary teams
- Review site investigations and construction observations; prepare site inspection records and technical notes
Key requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or closely related discipline
- Typically 2–5 years of relevant geotechnical experience
- Basic experience using PLAXIS 2D and/or PLAXIS 3D for geotechnical modelling
- Strong understanding of soil mechanics and soil parameter interpretation
- Experience in geotechnical design calculations and technical reporting
- Familiarity with UK geotechnical design standards, including Eurocode 7
- Experience on UK geotechnical or civil projects
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to undertake occasional site visits
- Experience preparing GI specifications, interpretative reports or geotechnical design reports
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Collaborative teamwork
- Problem-solving and analytical thinking
- PLAXIS 2D/3D
- Ground investigation interpretation
- Soil parameter interpretation
