Cleaning Operative

Company: Global Procurement Group
Apply for the Cleaning Operative
Location: Gateshead
Job Description:

In this role, you’ll be one of the people who keeps our Gateshead office running the way it should. When a spillage needs dealing with, when a meeting room needs turning around, when the kitchen needs restocking before the morning rush — you’ll be the one who makes sure it’s done properly and safely.

As a Cleaning Operative, you’ll sit within the Facilities Management team, reporting to the Cleaning Supervisor. You’ll carry out cleaning duties to the standards set out in our cleaning specification, help keep a large, busy office clean, hygienic and welcoming, and support the wider Facilities team with the upkeep of the building and its communal areas.

If you take pride in doing a job well, notice the details other people miss, and want to be part of a team that makes a real difference to how people feel when they walk into work, this is it.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Cleaning surfaces, fixtures and fittings, vacuuming carpets, and sweeping and mopping floors across offices, kitchens and breakout areas — all to the standards set out in the company cleaning specification
  • Checking communal areas throughout your shift and responding to spillages, stains, overflowing bins and other cleaning needs as they come up
  • Restocking kitchen and welfare supplies and using cleaning stock responsibly to prevent waste
  • Removing and segregating waste in line with company procedures, and keeping waste storage areas tidy and in line with landlord requirements
  • Completing cleaning checks and records on company systems, including RiskProof where required
  • Using cleaning equipment and chemicals safely and only as instructed in your training, risk assessments and working procedures — checking equipment before use and reporting any faults or damage
  • Identifying and reporting hazards such as spillages, leaks, poor air quality and slip or trip risks, and taking immediate action within your training to keep the area safe
  • Reporting building defects, damaged furniture and any task that can’t be completed safely or to standard — with clear details of the location, the issue and the follow‑up needed, ideally before the end of your shift
  • Supporting the Facilities team with office moves, meeting room set‑ups, event preparation and clean‑up, and providing concierge support where required
  • Providing a helpful, friendly service to colleagues and visitors, and demonstrating company values in everything you do

A typical shift will involve a mix of scheduled cleaning tasks and reacting to what the day brings. Some days you’ll be working steadily through your cleaning schedule. Other days, a spillage, an event set‑up or an urgent defect will need your attention straight away. Flexibility is key.

What Makes it Rewarding

  • You make a visible difference. A clean, safe, welcoming building is something everyone who walks through the door notices — and it’s down to you
  • Variety beyond cleaning. Office moves, meeting room set‑ups, events and concierge support mean no two shifts are exactly the same
  • Proper training and support. You’ll be trained on our cleaning specification, equipment, chemicals and procedures — and you’ll always know who to go to when something needs escalating
  • Part of a wider team. You’ll work alongside your cleaning colleagues and the wider Facilities team, supporting a growing, international business

What’s In It for You

  • Competitive salary – £13.45 per hour
  • 23 days holiday + additional December leave + bank holidays
  • Pension and access to Simplyhealth (money towards dental care, eyesight checks, physio, etc.)

Your First 90 Days

  • Weeks 1–3: Structured induction into the Facilities Management team and the building. You’ll be trained on the company cleaning specification, risk assessments, working procedures, and the safe use of equipment and chemicals. You’ll learn the layout of the office, your shift routine, and how to record checks on our systems, including RiskProof
  • Weeks 4–8: You’re working through your cleaning schedule with growing confidence. You’re spotting cleaning needs, hazards and defects before they become problems, reporting them clearly, and starting to support the team with meeting room set‑ups, events and other Facilities tasks
  • Weeks 9–12: You’re a trusted, consistent member of the team. Your standards are the same on every shift, you manage your time across the whole office without missing scheduled tasks, and the Cleaning Supervisor knows they can rely on you to get the job done — and to flag it when something isn’t right

This is for you, if:

  • You have experience working in a cleaning or Facilities team
  • You understand the safe use and control of cleaning chemicals
  • You have good communication skills and a friendly, customer-focused approach with colleagues and visitors
  • You are consistent — you maintain the same high standards on every shift
  • You have a strong eye for detail and notice cleaning needs, hazards and defects before others do
  • You are honest and open — you report accidents, damage and tasks that couldn’t be completed, rather than leaving them for someone else to find
  • You manage your time well and can organise your work across a large office without missing scheduled tasks
  • You can deal with straightforward issues within your training — and you know when a problem needs escalating
  • You work well as part of a team, with your cleaning colleagues and the wider Facilities team
  • Manual handling awareness, working at height awareness or customer care training is a plus, but not essential
  • You have the right to work in the UK (documentation required at interview) and are happy to undergo a DBS check
