Interim General Counsel – Infrastructure & Energy Projects

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced General Counsel to provide strategic legal leadership on a major future energy infrastructure and development programme, with a strong focus on EPC, EPCI and O&M contracting.

This is a senior, business-facing role where you will act as the lead legal adviser, partnering closely with project leadership, internal stakeholders and external advisers to support the successful delivery of a complex, high-value project.

TLT is open to England & Wales-qualified solicitors and offers a flexible UK-based working arrangement, with frequent travel to London and occasional travel within the UK and Europe. The anticipated start date is November 2026.

This role is an initial 12-month contract, with the potential for extension, and will be paid on a competitive day rate via an Umbrella company. We welcome applications from candidates seeking a part-time working arrangement.

About the Project

This opportunity sits within a large-scale infrastructure programme currently progressing through development, consenting and procurement phases.

As the project advances towards delivery, you will play a key role in supporting commercial objectives, managing legal risk and advising on EPC, construction and O&M agreements, alongside a broad range of contractual, regulatory and governance matters.

Your Role

You will provide commercially focused, pragmatic legal advice while maintaining oversight of the project’s legal risk profile. Acting as a trusted adviser to senior stakeholders, you will identify legal issues early, develop practical solutions and coordinate specialist support where required to ensure effective and timely decision-making.

A key aspect of the role will be supporting the procurement, negotiation and management of major EPC, EPCI and O&M contracts, ensuring robust risk allocation and commercially sound outcomes throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide commercially focused legal advice on key project decisions.
  • Embed legal considerations into business and technical decision-making.
  • Oversee legal risk and elevate significant issues through governance channels.
  • Act as the lead legal contact for the project.
  • Coordinate advice from internal specialists to deliver clear, consistent guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with legal policies, governance requirements and risk frameworks.
  • Support legal knowledge sharing and best practice.
  • Manage relationships with external law firms and specialist advisers.
  • Instruct and coordinate external counsel as required.
  • Define scopes of work, challenge advice where appropriate and ensure value for money.
  • Advise on commercial contracts, procurement, NDAs, consultancy agreements and contract amendments.
  • Provide guidance on contractual interpretation, IP and information-sharing matters.
  • Support the negotiation and management of EPC, EPCI, construction and O&M agreements.
  • Develop templates, precedents and guidance to improve consistency and efficiency.
  • Monitor legal spend and optimise the use of internal and external resources.
  • Coordinate UK and German legal support on development and environmental consents.
  • Advise on land access, property rights, easements and stakeholder agreements.
  • Ensure alignment of UK legal matters with wider European requirements.
  • Lead legal support for major EPC and EPCI procurement programmes.
  • Define procurement legal strategy, risk allocation and negotiation positions.
  • Support tender negotiations, contract reviews and governance approvals.
  • Advise on the procurement and implementation of long-term O&M arrangements.
  • Maintain the legal risk framework and risk register.
  • Provide legal input into approvals, investment decisions and governance processes.
  • Advise on claims, disputes and contractual notices, coordinating with internal and external counsel as required.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales).
  • Strong UK commercial contracts expertise.
  • Experience supporting major infrastructure or energy projects.
  • Proven experience with EPC, EPCI, construction, engineering or O&M contracts.
  • Experience managing external legal advisers.
  • Able to work independently within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including advising senior leaders.

Desirable

  • Experience in electricity transmission, offshore wind or subsea infrastructure.
  • Utilities sector experience.
  • Environmental consenting experience.
  • Project finance or large-scale EPC contracting experience.
