Senior Cable System Design Engineer (Transmission & Distribution)

Overview

As a Senior Cable System Design Engineer, you will drive end-to-end HV/EHV cable projects within AECOM’s Transmission & Distribution team. You’ll contribute from feasibility through detailed design, installation support, and commissioning on diverse onshore schemes, including high-profile initiatives like the Great Grid Upgrade. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated, compliant solutions that meet client needs and standards. Responsibilities

• Deliver full lifecycle cable engineering packages from feasibility to commissioning
• Review HV cable system designs including route, burial risk, thermal, electromagnetic, and mechanical calculations
• Perform cable rating and system studies (ampacity, short circuit, thermal stability, EMI)
• Carry out cable pulling, jointing, cleating, and installation feasibility
• Collaborate with civil, structural, substation and OHL teams for integrated solutions
• Conduct third-party inspections and support FAT/SAT, installation, and commissioning activities
• Interface with manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors to verify IEC, CIGRÉ, NG-TPs and other standards
• Participate in client meetings, technical workshops, HAZID/HAZOPs, and multidisciplinary coordination

Key requirements

• Experience in Cable System Design Engineering for HV/EHV transmission and distribution
• FEED experience essential
• Understanding of onshore cable routing, burial risk assessments, and protection strategies
• Knowledge of electromagnetic, thermal, and stability analysis; clawing and short circuit restraint
• Familiarity with IEC, CIGRÉ, and NG-TPs standards
• Experience with cable system ECI engineering, subsea control, testing, and third-party inspection
• Experience with tools such as CYMCAP, WinCable, AutoCAD, Revit, GIS, and mechanical simulation tools
