Overview

As a Senior Data Scientist at Elsevier, you apply advanced AI and ML to support scientific discovery, research intelligence, and editorial workflows. You will work across the full model lifecycle on NLP, LLMs, retrieval, and knowledge systems to solve complex scientific problems. You collaborate with engineering, product, and domain experts to deliver scalable, reliable AI products that help researchers progress science. This role blends deep technical work with product thinking and responsible AI practices. You will contribute to impactful systems that surface evidence, preserve context, and enable faster, higher-quality decisions in scientific domains.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy AI/ML/NLP/LLM solutions including semantic search, RAG, agentic workflows, and knowledge discovery systems
• Build and optimize research and decision-support capabilities using embeddings, knowledge graphs, ontologies, and domain content
• Establish evaluation, experimentation, and monitoring for AI and search systems (relevance, grounding, hallucination, reliability, cost, user impact)
• Collaborate with engineering, product, and research to productionize AI solutions, influence technical strategy, mentor data scientists, and promote responsible AI practices

Key requirements

• Significant experience applying data science, ML, AI, NLP, information retrieval, and statistics to production-grade solutions
• Hands-on expertise with ML/DL/LLMs/generative AI, semantic search, RAG, embeddings, ranking, and AI evaluation frameworks
• Proficiency in Python and data science tools; experience with large-scale datasets and deploying solutions using cloud, software engineering, and MLOps practices
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, leadership, and ability to translate business requirements into scalable AI solutions
