A Vacancy at South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust.
The Trust is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist for the Adult In-patient Eating Disorders Ward, Avalon Ward, Springfield University Hospital. This is an established post. The vacancy has arisen as a result of the current postholder re-locating.
This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and dynamic consultant psychiatrist to join this well-established in-patient eating disorders unit, with a well-functioning MDT and good national and international reputation.
The Adult Eating Disorder services comprise of the following: inpatient unit – Avalon ward, outpatient service, and day unit. All are located in a new, state-of-the-art Trinity building.
The Trust operates as part of the South London Partnership (SLP) – a collaboration between the 3 trusts providing Mental health services for the 12 Boroughs of South London (South London and Maudsley (SLaM), OXLEAS, and this Trust, South West London & St. George’s MH Trust). The SLP has an excellent reputation locally and nationally in the context of innovation and good quality, patient-centred care for the population of South London.
Avalon Ward is an 18-bed facility, providing care for local and national patients, mostly from Surrey, Sussex, and Kent, with eating disorders requiring inpatient treatment. The service accepts patients from age 18 who cannot be supported effectively in the community. Decisions about admissions are made jointly with our partner in the Provider Collaborative (SLaM) in the Single Point of Referrals.
We are Proud to Belong at South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust.
We have expert services, a rich history, and a clear commitment to providing the best quality care for those with mental ill-health. The Care Quality Commission already rates our services as ‘good’ — we aspire to be ‘outstanding’.
This is a great time to join us. We are transforming the way we care for our communities to support our mission of Making Life Better Together. We have built two brand new mental health facilities at Springfield University Hospital, which are amongst the best in the world. More developments are planned across our sites and services.
We are inclusive and diverse and strive to be actively anti-racist. We want to attract people from all backgrounds and experiences to enrich the work we do together. We are proud to co-produce and involve our local communities in all that we do.
The appointed consultant will provide overall clinical responsibility for the inpatient assessment, care, and treatment of adults on Avalon ward. As such, this post holder will need to support effective team functioning and will also be required to work with a part-time Consultant colleague, the team, and the directorate in service development initiatives. The aim of this post is to ensure the team delivers a high-quality and innovative service, to develop new treatment ideas in keeping with current evidence, to continually evaluate the treatment, and to work nationally towards improvement of services for patients with eating disorders. The appointed Consultant will have ample opportunities to engage in work and initiatives within the South London Provider Collaborative and in training opportunities, as well as in teaching students and trainees.
The postholder will share the clinical responsibilities of these patients with the other part‑time consultant and a very experienced SAS doctor, so that the workload is manageable. The maximum number of patients the consultant will manage at any point will depend on the complexity of the patients and their detained/voluntary status on the ward.
