Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 as a national health board, employing around 1200 people, and with an annual budget of around £101 million. Public Health Scotland wants to see a Scotland where everybody thrives, a Scotland where life expectancy improves and the difference in life expectancy between our poorest and wealthiest areas gets smaller.

The Post:

The Public Health Science Service is made up of approximately 56 staff, committed to improving population health and reducing health inequalities. We focus on the fundamental causes and primary prevention, employing three main approaches: data and intelligence; evaluation; and evidence synthesis.

This post sits in the data and intelligence function of the Public Health Science Service. We use information from a range of sources to better understand the health of the Scottish population, the factors that affect it and contribute to evaluation, monitoring and policy reviewing activity.

Our current work includes the following:

  • Understanding economic determinants of health and how to deliver an economy that supports health and wellbeing
  • Understanding trends in health inequalities
  • Evaluating action on the commercial determinants of health
  • Generating high quality information about children’s health and wellbeing
  • Contributing to a range of work within the Scottish Public Health Observatory (https://www.scotpho.org.uk/)

These posts are generic and we are required to move between topic areas as the public health landscape changes. However, the immediate focus of this post will be an exciting programme of work focused on the early years and young people. Using sound public health intelligence skills this post will contribute to the development and improvement of data and intelligence on the health and wellbeing of children and young people. However, previous experience in this topic area is not essential.

The Candidate:

You will bring strong technical public health intelligence skills and sound knowledge of the social determinants of health. You will be confident in working with complex data and evidence.

You will have well-developed communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to a range of audiences, including non-specialists. Strong interpersonal and partnership working skills are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively and influence across organisations.

Desired qualities

  • Want to work in an exciting and changing public health environment, in a supportive and enthusiastic team
  • Want to lead projects which influence policy and practice in Scotland
  • Enjoy working collaboratively and have strong analytical skills
  • Want a challenge – our work is complex and requires excellent analytical and research skills
