ABOUT EYE2GENE

Eye2Gene is a VC-funded, AI-powered precision ophthalmology platform. We combine imaging and genomics to speed up diagnosis and therapy development for genetic eye diseases worldwide.

Our platform helps biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and eyecare professionals, make data-driven decisions that get sight-saving treatments to patients sooner. By combining retinal imaging with genomic analysis, we aim to cut the diagnostic odyssey patients face from years to weeks.

THE ROLE

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to lead the development, deployment and application of Eye2Gene’s Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) and AI models, working mainly in Python and on AWS.

This is a hands‑on senior role. You’ll build and oversee efficient, well‑tested, production‑ready data pipelines, models and analyses, within a compliant software development lifecycle (GAMP 5 and IEC 62304) and in line with our Quality Management System (QMS).

The role combines data engineering, statistical analysis, applied data science and technical leadership. You’ll work in a collaborative team of developers, scientists, clinicians and quality colleagues.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Lead the design, development, testing and maintenance of data pipelines for processing, transforming and analysing data, under the guidance of the CTO and CAIO
  • Deploy, maintain and oversee pipelines, models and services on AWS
  • Write and review clean, efficient, reproducible, well‑documented production code
  • Develop comprehensive unit tests and drive broader test coverage and automated testing
  • Establish, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes
  • Monitor, troubleshoot and optimise pipeline and application performance, reliability and security

Analysis & reporting

  • Lead statistical analysis to support scientific, clinical and product decisions
  • Oversee the analysis of client data using Eye2Gene’s software and AI models, and carry out and guide downstream analysis
  • Validate outputs and make sure analyses are robust, reproducible and well documented
  • Build and maintain dashboards that present data and results clearly to internal and external users
  • Prepare and review analyses, summaries and reports for technical and non‑technical audiences

Quality & compliance

  • Follow and help uphold the software development lifecycle in line with GAMP 5 and IEC 62304, including planning, design, verification and validation
  • Produce and maintain software and analysis documentation, including requirements, design, traceability and verification records
  • Make sure development activities comply with the QMS and records are accurate and audit‑ready
  • Support software risk management, hazard analysis and software safety classification where relevant
  • Operate and enforce effective version control, change control and configuration management
  • Lead code and analysis reviews, and help define and uphold engineering and analysis standards
  • Contribute to technical architecture, methodology and key data science decisions
  • Mentor junior data scientists and developers, and help raise overall technical quality
  • Work closely with developers, scientists, clinicians and quality colleagues to turn requirements into robust, compliant analyses and workflows
  • Champion a quality‑first mindset and continuous improvement across the team

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Qualification

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in computer science, machine learning, biomedical engineering or a related field
  • 5 years’ postdoctoral experience applying machine learning to medical imaging
  • Strong track record developing and evaluating deep learning models
  • Expert in Python and modern ML frameworks
  • Experience with model evaluation beyond accuracy: calibration, uncertainty, top‑k performance, subgroup analysis and external validation
  • Experience handling large, heterogeneous clinical imaging datasets, including data curation, quality control and label noise
  • Understanding of dataset shift and generalisation across sites, devices and populations
  • Understanding of information governance for patient data (UK GDPR, NHS data security, data sharing agreements)
  • Ability to work with clinical, usability and human factors teams, turning user research findings into model or interface changes
  • Ability to lead technical workstreams independently and prioritise competing deadlines
  • Comfortable in a fast‑paced spin‑out environment with changing priorities
  • Formal training in medical device software standards
  • Experience with retinal imaging modalities (FAF, OCT, IR, colour fundus)
  • Knowledge of inherited retinal diseases or clinical genetics (genotype–phenotype relationships, rare disease class imbalance)
  • Experience with multi‑modal models, or combining imaging with genetic/clinical data
  • Awareness of the regulatory pathway for AI as a medical device (UKCA/MHRA, EU MDR, SaMD classification)
  • Experience writing technical documentation for a regulated product (e.g. software verification and validation, clinical evaluation input, risk management under ISO 14971)

WHY JOIN EYE2GENE

  • Work on technology that could improve outcomes for patients with genetic eye disease
  • Join a mission‑driven, VC‑backed company at the intersection of AI, genomics and ophthalmology
  • Play a key role in developing and improving our platform as we scale
  • Competitive salary of £70,000, depending on experience
  • Employee Share Option Pool: potential equity if milestones are met
