The Role
- Permanent
- Full Time
Matrix Tooling Services is a specialist supplier of metal cutting tools and machining expertise, based in the East Midlands. We work alongside manufacturers across the UK to select and apply the right tooling, helping them improve their processes, extend tool life and reduce cost per part. Our people are engineers first, and customers come to us for practical, industry-proven advice as much as for the products we supply. Matrix has been part of the Rubix group since 2018. Rubix is Europe’s largest supplier of industrial maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) products and services, operating in more than 20 countries. In the UK, Rubix is a leading multi-specialist distributor, and Matrix is its specialist cutting tools business. Being part of Rubix gives Matrix the reach, supplier relationships and investment of a major European group, while keeping the close customer focus of a specialist. For our people, it means genuine opportunities to develop a long-term career.
The role
The Internal Technical Support Engineer is the office-based technical voice of Matrix. You will advise customers and colleagues on tooling selection and application, turning your hands-on CNC machining experience into practical recommendations. This is an ideal next step for a time-served machinist who wants to move off the shop floor into a technical, customer-facing role. Full product and supplier training is provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the first point of technical contact for customers, the internal sales team and field-based engineers, by phone and email.
- Recommend the right cutting tools, grades, geometries and tool holding for milling, turning, drilling and threading applications.
- Advise on cutting data, including speeds, feeds and depths of cut, to suit the customer’s material, component and machine.
- Troubleshoot machining problems such as poor tool life, surface finish, vibration and chip control, and propose practical solutions.
- Interpret engineering drawings and component requirements to identify standard or special tooling, liaising with suppliers where needed.
- Prepare technical quotations and tooling proposals, including cost-per-part and productivity comparisons.
- Support the external technical sales engineers with tooling trials, test reports and customer follow-up.
- Keep product knowledge current through supplier training, and record enquiries and recommendations accurately on company systems.
Skills And Experience
- A completed engineering apprenticeship in CNC machining, or an equivalent qualification such as an NVQ Level 3, BTEC or HNC in mechanical or manufacturing engineering.
- Hands-on experience setting and operating CNC milling or CNC turning machines. Experience of both is an advantage.
- Good working knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, grades and tool holding, and how they perform across different materials.
- Confident reading engineering drawings, including tolerances and surface finish requirements.
- A sound understanding of speeds and feeds. Familiarity with common CNC controls such as Fanuc, Heidenhain, Siemens or Mazatrol is desirable, as is CAD/CAM awareness.
- A clear, confident communicator who is comfortable talking to machinists, programmers and buyers.
- Organised and computer literate, able to manage several enquiries at once and follow them through.
- Keen to move from the shop floor into a technical support role. Previous sales or office experience is not essential.
