Senior Electrical Engineer – HV Substation Design (UK & Ireland)

Overview

As Senior Electrical Design Engineer, you will lead HV substation design from concept to energisation on grid-scale projects in the UK/ Ireland, contributing to the energy transition. You’ll work within the Transmission and Distribution team to shape major infrastructure and provide design input for renewables and grid projects. The role combines technical ownership with collaboration across projects, leveraging automation to drive efficiency and innovation. You’ll engage with high-profile clients and help deliver transformational energy infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Produce primary plant layouts for HV substations
• Produce equipment specifications for HV plant and associated equipment
• Provide engineering design input to major infrastructure projects
• Undertake an Owners’ Engineer role on HV substation/cable and OHL projects
• Provide HV design input to renewable energy projects (battery storage, solar, hydro, wind)
• Provide professional services to clients in Ireland/UK and overseas

Key requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering
• Experience of working on HV projects
• Experience of working with major utilities or developers
• Experience as a designer or as project engineer
• Experience developing specifications for substation control systems, transformers, GIS, and AIS switchgear
• Ability to work flexibly across multiple projects
• Fluency in English
• Experience in technical report writing
• Full driving license and access to a personal vehicle for site visits
• Ideally experience in multi-discipline engineering projects
• Ideally Chartered accreditation or working toward
• Ideally consultancy experience
• Ideally experience in reviewing detailed designs & witnessing construction site activities
