About The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Payroll Specialist to join our Payroll team, based in A&O Shearman’s Belfast Office. This role is offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract basis and is integral to maintaining the accuracy and efficiency of our payroll operations. The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for managing the monthly payroll process for UK-based employees, ensuring all payroll activities are completed accurately and in a timely manner. The role involves handling employee queries, processing payroll changes, and supporting the payroll team in various administrative tasks. Additionally, the position offers an opportunity to contribute to the development of a compliant, resilient, and scalable multi-jurisdictional payroll service, including UAE payroll expansion plans.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of processing payroll for a comparable organization, demonstrating strong technical knowledge and attention to detail. Essential qualifications include extensive experience with UK payroll processes, including PAYE, National Insurance, statutory payments, pensions auto-enrolment, RTI, and benefits administration. A professional payroll qualification such as CIPP membership is highly desirable. The candidate should possess excellent numerical skills, strong organizational abilities, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word. Prior experience with accounting and financial systems, as well as familiarity with payroll software such as PeopleSoft HRIS and SD Worx, will be considered advantageous. Flexibility to work overtime during peak periods is also important.

Responsibilities

The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for a variety of key tasks, including processing allocated UK payrolls from data collection and validation through to final payment. This involves inputting and validating all payroll changes, such as starters, leavers, contractual modifications, absences, overtime, allowances, deductions, and one-off payments. The role requires calculating statutory and occupational payments, including family-related leave and sickness benefits, alongside complex adjustments like GAYE, employee loans, and salary sacrifices. The specialist will administer payroll and remittance arrangements for contractors operating inside IR35, ensuring compliance with HMRC requirements, including tax code updates and Student Loan notifications.

The role also involves responding promptly to employee and contractor payroll inquiries, liaising with HR Operations and HR Managers to resolve issues related to payments and calculations, and assisting with benefit administration such as pensions, PMI, dental schemes, and salary sacrifice programs. Monthly reconciliation of payroll and remittance control accounts, journal creation, and year-end processes are also part of the responsibilities. In partnership with the Payroll Manager, the specialist will review and authorize payroll calculations, prepare PAYE disbursements, and submit EPS to HMRC. Staying updated on payroll legislation and regulatory changes is essential to ensure ongoing compliance. The role may also involve supporting ad hoc projects and process improvements as directed by the Payroll Manager.

Working at Workcircle offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your professional development and personal well-being. Employees enjoy competitive salary packages, opportunities for career advancement, and access to training programs to enhance their skills. The company promotes a healthy work-life balance through flexible working arrangements and encourages a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture. Additional benefits include pension schemes, health and wellness programs, and support for continuous learning and professional certifications. Workcircle values its employees and strives to create a motivating environment where everyone can succeed and contribute meaningfully to the organization’s goals.
