Job Description:

Construction, Engineering & Technical Consultancy

Are you a relationship-focused Business Development Manager who enjoys meeting people, opening doors and turning good conversations into lasting partnerships?

We’re looking for someone with energy, initiative and strong account management skills to help an ambitious consultancy grow.

Experience working with public-sector clients would be particularly valuable, while a background in construction, building regulations or related technical services would be an advantage – but isn’t essential.

You’ll be someone who takes the time to understand a client’s business, spots opportunities and follows through. Just as importantly, you’ll have the commercial drive to turn those relationships into profitable work.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to take ownership of business development across a growing consultancy, working directly with its Directors to shape the approach, identify opportunities and develop new and existing client relationships.

You’ll manage opportunities from the first introduction through to securing projects, supported by technical specialists and existing Key Client Account Managers & Engineers.

The role combines relationship building, new business development and strategic account growth, with clear responsibility for results.

What You’ll Be Doing

Building relationships and winning business

  • Identify and engage prospective clients across relevant sectors, including public-sector organisations, contractors, developers and property businesses.
  • Build trusted relationships with decision-makers and understand their priorities, projects and procurement processes.
  • Develop opportunities from initial conversation through to appointment, coordinating technical input where needed.
  • Attend relevant industry events to build your network and raise the consultancy’s profile.

Growing existing accounts

  • Work alongside Key Client Account Managers and Directors to strengthen strategic relationships.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce additional services, access other teams and secure repeat business.
  • Develop focused account plans for key clients and prospects, with clear actions and ownership.
  • Support existing account managers without replacing their responsibility for the client relationship.

Shaping the business development strategy

  • Work with Directors and team leads to develop an annual business development plan.
  • Identify priority sectors, clients, projects and geographical markets.
  • Translate the strategy into practical quarterly, monthly and weekly activity.
  • Review progress and adapt the approach based on results and emerging opportunities.
  • Work with Marketing on targeted campaigns that support client engagement and business development.

Managing the pipeline

  • Own and maintain an accurate, active business development pipeline within the CRM.
  • Qualify opportunities, agree next steps and keep conversations moving.
  • Address stalled opportunities and identify gaps in future workload.
  • Forecast potential revenue, taking a realistic view of opportunity value, timing and likelihood of conversion.
  • Keep Directors informed of progress, challenges and opportunities.

Supporting tenders and frameworks

  • Identify relevant frameworks, tender opportunities and routes to market.
  • Coordinate applications, submissions and renewals with Directors and technical teams.
  • Help prioritise opportunities based on commercial potential and suitability.
  • Maintain visibility of deadlines and actions across public-sector, local authority, housing association and construction procurement opportunities.
  • Develop framework relationships and pursue opportunities for work following appointment.

What We’re Looking For

  • A track record of generating new business and developing lasting B2B client relationships.
  • Strong account and relationship management skills, with the ability to grow existing business as well as win new clients.
  • An energetic, proactive approach and the confidence to start conversations with new people.
  • Experience managing a sales or business development pipeline and using a CRM effectively.
  • Commercial judgement: understanding which opportunities are worth pursuing and what makes work profitable.
  • Clear communication and presentation skills, with the ability to bring technical colleagues into conversations at the right time.
  • The ability to organise your own activity, work independently and take ownership of agreed targets.

Experience working with public-sector clients is particularly welcome. A background in construction, property, building regulations, engineering or technical consultancy would be useful, but we’re also open to strong relationship-led business developers from other relevant B2B sectors.

Experience with frameworks, tenders, public procurement or selling professional services would be an additional advantage.

What Success Looks Like

Success will be measured through profitable new business, stronger client relationships and a healthy pipeline – not simply activity for activity’s sake.

Agreed objectives will cover revenue secured, opportunity generation and conversion, growth within strategic accounts, and tender and framework results.
