Job Description:

Electrical Engineer – Power Systems & Grid Infrastructure

Engineer the grid infrastructure of tomorrow

Our Client, Fidra Energy, is developing some of Europe’s largest grid-connected energy infrastructure projects – GW-scale, transmission-connected battery storage assets that strengthen the flexibility, resilience and security of the electricity system.

Backed by EIG and the National Wealth Fund and headquartered in Edinburgh, Fidra currently has approximately 3GW of secured UK projects, including:

  • Thorpe Marsh – 1.4GW
  • West Burton C – 500MW
  • Bicker Fen 1 & 2 – 1.2GW

Thorpe Marsh is one of Europe’s largest battery development projects and secured funding in September 2025 to progress into construction.

Their ambition is even bigger: to develop a 10GW portfolio across the UK and major European markets by 2030.

To help deliver that ambition, we are looking for an Electrical Engineer to join their Growth & Strategy team.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced power industry Electrical Engineer to provide electrical engineering expertise across Fidra Energy’s portfolio of large-scale, grid-connected projects in the UK.

The role covers the full electrical scope of project development – from site feasibility, capacity assessment and electrical concept design through grid connection, procurement and pre-construction – with a strong focus on HV/EHV systems, substations, protection and network compliance.

You will work closely with colleagues across development, commercial and investment teams, as well as external consultants, NESO, transmission owners, DNOs, OEMs and EPC contractors. The role will involve assessing technical options, identifying risks and constraints, and developing practical solutions that meet both engineering and commercial requirements.

This role is ideally suited to an Electrical Engineer from a utility, transmission or distribution network operator, power generation, or HV consultancy/contracting background who wants to apply core power systems expertise to major new infrastructure. Previous battery storage or renewables experience is desirable but not essential.

What You’ll Be Doing

Electrical Design & Power Systems

  • Develop electrical concepts for HV/EHV connections, including single line diagrams, substation arrangements, protection philosophies and earthing design.
  • Specify, scope and review power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit/fault level, harmonics, insulation coordination and dynamic studies.
  • Provide technical input on primary and secondary plant, including transformers, switchgear, cables, reactive compensation, protection & control systems and power conversion equipment.
  • Define technical scope and employer’s requirements for consultants, EPC contractors and OEMs.
  • Review third-party designs and studies to ensure technical compliance and alignment with development assumptions and commercial objectives.

Grid & Network Connections

  • Lead or support grid connection applications and negotiations with NESO, transmission owners and DNOs.
  • Interpret and challenge connection offers, technical schedules and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure designs comply with the GB Grid Code, Distribution Code, G99/G100 and relevant ENA Engineering Recommendations (e.g. G5, P28, S34).
  • Support compliance processes through commissioning and energisation.

Project Development & Technical Risk

  • Provide electrical engineering input into site feasibility, capacity optimisation and layout strategy.
  • Identify and assess technical constraints and opportunities that could influence project viability, cost, programme and value.
  • Support investment, land and planning decisions through robust technical feasibility assessments.
  • Identify and manage technical risks through the development lifecycle, before they become project issues.

Stakeholder, Procurement & Consultant Management

  • Act as the technical interface between internal teams, external consultants, network operators, OEMs and EPC contractors.
  • Lead technical evaluation of tenders and vendor assessments for specification compliance, including Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of key electrical equipment.
  • Contribute to supplier selection from a technical and commercial perspective.
  • Support technical due diligence for acquisitions or project financing.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for an engineer with a solid grounding in the power industry, strong electrical fundamentals and the commercial awareness to apply them to major infrastructure projects.

  • Degree in Electrical / Electrical Power Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in the UK power industry – for example with a transmission or distribution network operator, generator, utility, or HV consultancy or contractor.
  • Strong understanding of LV, MV, HV and EHV electrical systems, including substations, transformers, switchgear and cabling.
  • Sound knowledge of power system protection, earthing and power system studies.
  • Knowledge of UK grid connection processes and standards, including the Grid Code, Distribution Code and G99/G100.
  • Experience reviewing consultant, contractor or other third-party technical designs and outputs.
  • Experience with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), site testing or commissioning of HV equipment.
  • Ability to make sound engineering judgements while understanding their commercial and project implications.
  • Experience of transmission-connected (132kV, 275kV or 400kV) projects or substation design and delivery.
  • Familiarity with connection processes, connection queues and connection strategy optimisation.
  • Experience of Grid Code compliance, commissioning and energisation.
  • Experience with power system analysis software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP or PSS®E.
  • Understanding of how planning, land and environmental constraints can influence electrical design.
  • Experience supporting technical due diligence, project financing or financial close.
  • Experience working on major construction projects.
  • Exposure to power electronics, inverter-based resources or energy storage (helpful, but not required).
  • Chartered Engineer status or active progression towards professional registration.

Behavioural Competences

  • Ensures teams are aligned and engaged, working collaboratively to deliver plans that support Fidra Energy’s vision and ambitions.
  • Identifies the changes and priorities that will have the greatest impact, while supporting others and encouraging their ideas and initiatives.
  • Builds a culture of trust and openness, anticipating and addressing obstacles to achieving our ambitions while maintaining our values and commitment to safe operations.
  • Understands and responds to stakeholder needs, looking for ways to build trust, strengthen relationships and deliver an excellent service.
  • Adapting positively to challenges, persevering through obstacles and responding constructively to issues while managing pressure effectively.
  • Builds strong relationships with others, taking a genuine interest in colleagues and stakeholders and encouraging openness, collaboration and diverse perspectives.
  • Keeps up to date with external developments and best practice, using relevant analysis, trends and new approaches to inform and improve our work.

Why Fidra?

Fidra is building a large-scale, grid-connected energy infrastructure platform – GW-scale assets connecting into the UK transmission network, supporting the evolving electricity system and expanding into major European markets.

Joining now means you will have the opportunity to:

  • Apply your power systems expertise to GW-scale, transmission-connected projects from early development through delivery.
  • Influence projects at a stage where engineering decisions can have significant technical and commercial impact.
  • Gain broad exposure across grid, development, procurement, investment and construction.
  • Work alongside experienced specialists across the energy and infrastructure sector.
  • Help shape the electrical engineering standards and technical approach of a rapidly growing business.
  • Play a direct role in delivering infrastructure that strengthens the security and flexibility of the electricity system.
  • Grow with a business targeting 10GW of projects by 2030.

If you’re an electrical engineer looking for a role where your technical expertise can influence what gets built, how it connects and how successfully it is delivered, we’d like to hear from you.
