Job Description:

Crate | Hackney Wick, E9 (with travel to our other sites when needed) | £40,000–£48,000 DOE | Permanent | 4 day week

About Crate

We started Crate in 2012, brewing beer and making pizza by the canal in Hackney Wick. Since then, we’ve grown to include a second venue in Wood Wharf, alongside our online shop and wholesale drinks business. We’re still independent, and our roots are firmly in East London.

Our Support Office is based at The White Building in Hackney Wick, alongside a mix of independent creative businesses. We’re a small, hands‑on team, and we’re looking for someone who enjoys getting stuck in with a support role where no two days are quite the same.

This role comes with the option to work a four‑day week post successful probation (32 hours) for no loss of pay. We will work with you to embrace the four day ethos and find efficiencies in your working day, without compromising output.

Our values guide how we work:

Think Big: back bold, commercially grounded ideas.

Get Creative: find inventive solutions that work in practice.

Do Good: treat our team, customers and community fairly.

Be Exceptional: keep high standards and take pride in the detail.

Be You: bring your individuality, with respect for everyone around you.

The role

Reporting to our Head of Finance, you’ll take ownership of our management accounts and P&Ls, run payroll and keep our ledgers in order. You’ll also be the go‑to person for finance questions across the business. We’re a small team, so you’ll get involved in plenty of different things and see how the numbers connect to what’s happening across our venues and wider business.

What you’ll do

Management accounts: keep the P&L up to date for our 13-period reporting cycle, post period-end and year-end journals, and handle bank and balance sheet reconciliations, including fixed assets and intracompany accounts across our entities.

Payables: keep tight control of the purchase ledger in Dext and Xero, and pay suppliers in line with their credit terms.

Payroll and expenses: run fortnightly and monthly payroll using Workforce and Xero, and process staff expenses through Pleo.

Planning: contribute to budgets and forecasts, and manage our cash flow forecast.

Commercial support: work with the sales team to keep the receivables ledger accurate and reduce aged debt, build the reports and workbooks they need, and help with customer account and credit control queries.

Business partnering: give budget-to-actual reporting to colleagues running projects and sites, and analyse sales, procurement and spend.

Compliance and systems: review VAT returns, reconcile PAYE and keep our finance integrations working and reconciled.

What you’ll bring

Experience in a finance role covering several of the areas above, such as payables, reconciliations, payroll or month‑end

Confidence with Xero, or a similar cloud accounting package, and strong Excel skills

Accuracy and pride in getting the detail right, with the ability to explain numbers clearly to people who aren’t in finance

A proactive, solutions‑first approach

Nice to have:

Hospitality, retail or multi‑site experience, or accountancy practice background

Familiarity with Dext, Pleo or Xero

What you’ll get

A free staff meal and drink when working on site, plus staff soft drinks

A generous staff discount across our bars and online shop

Summer and winter whole‑company parties

A bike loan scheme with repayments taken from your wages

An employee assistance programme

We welcome applications from everyone and want our team to reflect the communities we serve. If you need any adjustments during the application or interview process, let us know.
