Controls & Automation Proposals Engineer – PLC / SCADA

The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Controls & Automation Proposals Engineer to join a well-established systems integration and industrial automation business in their Middlesbrough office.
Working closely with the Senior Proposals Manager, you will be responsible for developing high-quality technical proposals across a diverse range of automation solutions, from PLC and SCADA systems through to full turnkey projects.
This is a varied, client-facing role combining technical expertise, commercial awareness, and strong communication skills, ideal for someone with an engineering background looking to move into a proposals or pre-sales position.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce detailed technical proposals and tenders for:
- PLC & SCADA systems
- Control system upgrades and modifications
- Digital and manufacturing information systems (MIS/MES)
- Service level agreements and support contracts
- Engineering resource / manpower solutions
- Full turnkey automation projects
- Collaborate with sales teams and customers to fully understand requirements
- Define technical solutions and prepare accurate cost estimates
- Build and maintain quotation cost spreadsheets.
- Liaise with suppliers and internal engineering teams to obtain pricing and delivery timelines
- Ensure all proposals are accurate, compliant, and professionally presented
- Support internal approval processes with Project Managers and senior stakeholders
- Develop strong customer relationships and respond promptly to enquiries
- Maintain high standards of written documentation and technical clarity
Ideal Candidate
- Background in engineering, automation, or process control systems
- Knowledge of PLC, SCADA, and industrial automation solutions
- Experience within a systems integrator, engineering, or manufacturing environment
- Strong technical writing and communication skills
- High attention to detail with a focus on accuracy in quotations and proposals
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build lasting relationships
Desirable
- Experience in proposals, estimating, pre-sales, or technical sales
- Knowledge of manufacturing execution systems (MES) or digital solutions
