Principal Electrical Engineer – HV Substation Design (UK & Ireland)

Overview

In this role you will lead HV substation design within the Transmission and Distribution team, shaping major infrastructure projects for clients like National Grid and EirGrid. You will drive design input, specify equipment, and ensure tender and construction robustness, partnering with clients and specialists to deliver impactful energy infrastructure. The work blends technical excellence with collaboration and innovation to enable the UK and Ireland’s energy transition.

Responsibilities

• Produce primary plant layouts for HV substations
• Lead engineering design input to major infrastructure projects
• Undertake Project Development/Pre-construction activities including optimum cable routing
• Prepare equipment specifications for HV Plant and associated equipment
• Develop specifications with technology specialists and external partners
• Create tender specifications and conduct tender evaluations
• Provide design assurance of tender documentation and participate in supplier meetings
• At construction, review supplier designs, perform manufacturing assurance audits, support commissioning and fault resolution
• Act as trusted partner to key clients
• Mentor junior team members

Key requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering
• Experience with consultancy/contractor/utility in energy sector
• Client experience with National Grid, ESB, EirGrid, SHET, SSE, SPT or similar UK/Ireland utilities
• Extensive FEED designer, detailed design or owner’s engineer experience
• Experience designing HV infrastructure at concept and FEED stages
• Experience in detailed design, design assurance and owners engineer roles advantageous
• Understanding of AIS and GIS electrical HV Plant infrastructure
• Strong client-facing skills and team player mindset
• Ability to work across multiple projects
• Full driving licence
• Ideally project management experience and multi-discipline project leadership
