A global technology group is hiring a Project Manager for its space business in the UK. The business designs, builds and tests high-performance sensors and sub-systems for space science, earth observation and astronomy missions. It now delivers complete focal plane solutions, including mechanical assembly, cryogenics and electronics, and several large multi-year programmes are increasing demand across operations.
This is a hands-on, product-focused role. You’ll take over live projects from day one, leading a cross-functional team of 10+ engineers and technical staff to deliver hardware to customers and hit revenue targets. You’ll also manage strategic R&D projects and support bids.
What you’ll do
- Lead cross-functional teams of engineers and manufacturing staff to deliver projects on time, on cost and to quality
- Agree and manage scope with customers, internal and external, and keep scope creep under control
- Build detailed schedules in MS Project and publish them to MS Project Server
- Run phase gate reviews and keep them on schedule
- Identify risks, issues and dependencies, and resolve them before they need escalating
- Work with Finance to set and track budgets, including estimates to complete and risk exposure
- Present project dashboards to the senior leadership team each month
- Work with Business Development, Engineering and Programme Directors to shape technical and commercial solutions for customers
- Mentor more junior project staff and help improve project management processes
What you’ll bring
- Experience managing projects from bid to production, with an emphasis on production
- A track record of motivating teams to meet tight deadlines
- Confidence managing customer expectations and scope
- A solid grasp of risk management and how to use it to run a project
- Clear, persuasive communication at all levels
- Sound judgement on when to own a problem and when to elevate it
- Strong working knowledge of MS Project and MS Project Server, or a similar enterprise tool
- A project management qualification such as APM or PRINCE2 (desirable)
Why this role
The products you deliver will fly on space missions. You’ll join a team with a growing order book, work alongside experienced engineers and scientists, and have a say in how project management is done across the business.
