Are you an experienced, hands-on geotechnical engineer ready to take greater ownership of technical work, projects and client relationships?
Caulmert is looking to appoint a Senior Geotechnical Engineer offering varied design and site-based work, increasing responsibility and a clear route towards Principal-level capability.
The role covers ground investigation, interpretation and design, earthworks, foundations, slopes and infrastructure projects across rail, industrial, mining, waste and development schemes.
Who will I be working with?
Caulmert is a progressive multidisciplinary consultancy. You will work with experienced geotechnical and geoenvironmental specialists, civil and structural engineers, environmental consultants and technicians, alongside clients, contractors and specialist suppliers. The role provides genuine scope to broaden your technical experience and lead defined projects and packages.
What will the role entail?
Investigation, interpretation and reporting
- Scope and coordinate ground investigations, testing and contractors, maintaining clear attention to safety, quality and programme.
- Plan fieldwork and laboratory requirements and monitor delivery against the technical brief.
- Interpret ground information and develop clear ground models, parameters, assumptions and risk-based recommendations.
- Prepare desk studies, GIRs, GDRs, earthworks documents, risk registers and technical advice, recording uncertainty and residual risk clearly.
Design and project delivery
- Undertake design and assessment of foundations, platforms, retaining systems, slopes, embankments, cuttings, earthworks and ground-improvement measures.
- Manage defined projects or packages to agreed scope, fee, programme and quality, escalating uncertainty or specialist issues appropriately.
- Support construction queries, temporary works, specialist proposals and contractor-led delivery.
- Use appropriate analysis and design software, carrying out proportionate self-checking and seeking specialist review where required.
Clients and team contribution
- Communicate confidently with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary teams, and support proposals, reporting and invoicing.
- Coordinate graduates, technicians, field staff and subcontractors, checking defined outputs and sharing practical feedback.
- Build positive client and contractor relationships through responsive, practical and well-communicated advice.
- Contribute to technical standards, QA, lessons learned and your own progression towards chartership and Principal responsibility.
What experience would be particularly valuable?
Candidates do not need every specialism. Particularly valuable experience includes:
- Infrastructure or rail geotechnics, including embankments, slopes, existing assets or station works.
- Foundations, retaining structures, earthworks, ground improvement or temporary works.
- Ground stabilisation, material reuse, soil nails, anchors or reinforced-soil systems.
- Mining, quarrying, landfill, waste, geoenvironmental or contaminated-land projects as complementary experience.
What are we looking for?
Above all, we are looking for a capable Senior-level engineer who is technically sound, practical and ready to take greater ownership while continuing to develop under experienced leadership.
- Typically 5 to 8 years of relevant experience with increasing technical and project responsibility.
- Active progress towards Chartered Engineer or Chartered Geologist status.
- Good ground-investigation, interpretation and reporting experience.
- Sound design capability across several of foundations, retaining structures, earthworks, slopes, ground improvement or temporary works.
- Ability to deliver projects or packages to agreed scope, programme, fee and quality.
- Confident use of relevant geotechnical software, with the judgement to recognise when senior review is needed.
- Experience coordinating contractors, fieldwork, testing or junior colleagues.
- Good knowledge of UK standards, Eurocodes, CDM and consultancy practice, plus a full UK driving licence.
What do we offer?
You will join a friendly, professional and ambitious business where your contribution, ideas and results are recognised.
- Varied multidisciplinary work across relevant infrastructure, development and environmental sectors.
- Flexible working arrangements, balanced with the needs of clients, projects, offices, fieldwork and team development.
- Competitive remuneration, 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, increasing to 30 days with length of service.
- Private medical care, company pension and investment in professional and technical development.
- The opportunity to join an employee-owned business and, where appropriate, potentially purchase Company shares.
- A clear pathway towards Principal-level responsibility based on technical delivery, judgement, project ownership and contribution to clients and the team.
