Platform Engineer

Overview

In this Platform Engineer role you will own and evolve the hybrid cloud and on-premise infrastructure at Vertical Aerospace, focusing on reliability, security, and scalable operations. You will collaborate across teams to automate and improve deployment, monitoring, and resilience of Azure-centric and hybrid platforms. The role supports rapid growth towards airliner-level safety certification and scalable green aviation tech. You will shape platform strategy and drive secure, automated, and observable environments.

Responsibilities

• Own platform reliability and resilience for cloud and on-premises infrastructure
• Manage and modernise hybrid infrastructure (Azure, Hyper-V, Linux, Active Directory)
• Drive automation and continuous improvement using Terraform, Azure DevOps, and scripting
• Strengthen security posture and support ISO 27001 compliance
• Maintain and test backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity plans
• Improve platform monitoring and observability to optimise reliability
• Collaborate with engineering teams to improve deployment processes and tooling
• Shape future platform strategy across Azure, AWS, and emerging tech

Key requirements

• Strong hands-on experience managing Microsoft Azure infrastructure (VMs, scale sets, AKS, storage, managed databases)
• Experience administering Hyper-V, Linux, and Active Directory in hybrid setups
• Practical experience with infrastructure as code and automation (Terraform, Azure DevOps, scripting like PowerShell, Python, Bash)
• Solid understanding of monitoring/observability tools (Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus)
• Experience applying security best practices and ISO 27001 compliance
• Experience backup, recovery, DR, and business continuity testing
