Job Description:

Project Engineer – Civil – Power Projects (Pre-Construction)

United Kingdom, Hybrid with travel

About the Company

A leading UK utility infrastructure provider delivering integrated energy and connectivity solutions.

The business supports the design, delivery, and commissioning of critical infrastructure projects across the power, renewable energy, data centre, and industrial sectors.

With a strong focus on safety, innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction, the company partners with major clients to deliver complex engineering projects that support the UK’s evolving energy landscape.

About the Role

This is a hybrid project engineering / project management position with a strong focus on preconstruction through to on-site delivery.

You’ll take ownership of the civil (CSA) scope across a portfolio of grid connection and energy infrastructure projects, helping shape the construction strategy, de-risk delivery, coordinate technical interfaces, and then driving safe execution through to handover.

You’ll work closely with design, commercial, planning, and construction teams, acting as the key technical lead for CSA buildability, sequencing, temporary works considerations, documentation readiness, and subcontractor coordination, often within live operational substation environments (DNO/TSO).

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the CSA scope from pre-construction planning through construction and final handover across multiple projects.
  • Develop / own CSA delivery strategies, including construction methodology, sequencing, logistics, programme input, and resourcing approach.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces between design, project management, construction, and supply chain, ensuring designs are buildable and aligned to site constraints.
  • Support tendering and work-winning, providing technical input into methodologies, programmes, risk/opportunity, and cost-effective build approaches.
  • Manage subcontractor and direct resource performance on-site; drive safety, quality, and programme adherence.
  • Plan and coordinate work in live substations, ensuring compliance with applicable rules, permits, and safe systems of work.
  • Lead inspections, hold points, final audits and acceptance of civil/structural works (earthworks, concrete, drainage, ducts, foundations, structures, etc.).
  • Identify and resolve construction-phase issues (RFIs, NCRs, design clarifications), producing clear technical reports and recommendations.
  • Ensure site records are controlled and complete: ITPs, test sheets, as-builts, redlines, handover packs, and document management uploads.
  • Support surveying / setting out and ensure accurate capture of as-built data.
  • Build strong relationships with clients and stakeholders; represent the business at site/client meetings and working groups.
  • Step in as deputy to the Engineering Manager when required.

Requirements

Experience

  • Demonstrable delivery of major UK power / energy infrastructure projects, ideally grid connections (distribution and/or transmission).
  • Experience working in live substations for a DNO/TSO (typically 11kV up to 400kV).Strong understanding of engineering standards and how to apply them in both design coordination and construction delivery.
  • Experience contributing to pre-construction activities: methodology, buildability, risk management, programme inputs, and subcontractor planning.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills, able to lead issue resolution across multiple stakeholders.

Qualifications / tickets

  • Minimum BTEC HNC in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Emergency First Aid at Work.
  • Valid CSCS and/or EUSR card (as applicable).
  • Full UK driving licence; comfortable travelling frequently across the UK.
