Location: Motherwell, occasional travel to project sites
Reports to: Senior Engineering Manager
The opportunity
A major infrastructure contractor is recruiting a Technical Manager – Overhead Lines to provide specialist technical leadership across its Scottish electricity transmission projects.
Based in Motherwell, you will support projects delivered to SSEN Transmission and SP Energy Networks requirements, including a major Scottish Power programme valued at approximately £800 million.
This is a role with responsibility across several projects. As the overhead line subject matter expert, you will work alongside Engineering Managers, Design Coordinators and construction teams to ensure designs are technically sound, practical to build and correctly implemented on site.
The role
You will provide technical guidance from feasibility and early contractor involvement through design development, construction, commissioning and handover. Your focus will be on maintaining engineering governance and ensuring that the installed works meet the approved design, project scope and client standards.
Working across several project teams, you will resolve complex technical issues, guide design decisions and help establish consistent engineering practices across new-build, refurbishment and upgrade schemes.
Key responsibilities
- Act as the principal source of OHL technical expertise across the allocated projects.
- Review and validate design proposals against client specifications, technical standards, project requirements and construction constraints.
- Support feasibility studies, concept development, tender reviews and early contractor involvement.
- Provide technical oversight of interfaces between electrical design, towers, foundations, earthing, conductors, insulators and fittings.
- Work with Engineering Managers and Design Coordinators to identify design risks, resolve technical queries and coordinate specialist input.
- Review installation proposals and construction methods to ensure they reflect the approved design and its assumptions.
- Visit sites to support delivery teams, investigate technical issues and check that designs are being implemented correctly.
- Review design changes, material substitutions and departures from standards, ensuring they follow the required approval process.
- Provide technical approvals within delegated authority and escalat(e) decisions requiring senior or client approval.
- Support supplier assessments, material selection, inspection plans and factory or type testing where required.
- Contribute to commissioning readiness, technical handover records and the resolution of outstanding engineering issues.
- Promote standardisation, share lessons learned and mentor colleagues across the engineering and delivery teams.
- Advise project teams on the safety, quality, programme and cost implications of technical decisions.
Experience and capabilities
We are looking for an experienced overhead line professional who can combine detailed technical knowledge with a practical understanding of construction.
You will bring:
- Substantial experience in high-voltage overhead line engineering, technical assurance or engineering management.
- Experience supporting OHL projects through design and construction, with a clear understanding of installation methods and site constraints.
- The ability to review and challenge designs, explain technical risks and develop workable solutions with designers and contractors.
- Knowledge of OHL components and the interfaces between electrical, structural and civil engineering.
- Experience working within formal engineering governance, design review and technical approval processes.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to influence several project teams.
Particularly relevant experience includes:
- Worked on projects with clients such as SSEN Transmission, SP Energy Networks or comparable UK transmission schemes.
- Must have technical knowledge of OHL from design stage to handover
Why consider this opportunity?
This position offers the opportunity to become a recognised technical specialist across a substantial portfolio of electricity infrastructure work. You will influence engineering decisions, support construction teams and improve consistency across projects while reporting directly to the Senior Engineering Manager.
