Director of Engineering

Overview

In this role you will own Wheely’s platform and infrastructure end-to-end, shaping the architectural direction and real-time capabilities of the driver and passenger apps. You will lead privacy-by-design initiatives and develop the internal agent harness that enables AI-driven workflows. Based in London, you will help establish Wheely as a global engineering hub while collaborating with the Cyprus core. The position is a hands-on leadership role in a fast-growing, privacy-focused scale-up, offering influence over tech strategy, hiring, and culture.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end technical direction of the platform, including architectural decisions on microservices vs alternative patterns
• Deliver and optimize real-time functionality for the driver app under adverse network conditions
• Lead engineering-centric privacy strategy and data-flow design
• Develop and scale the agent harness to enable AI-driven automated workflows
• Build and shape London as an engineering hub, including team growth and work allocation
• Make hiring and leadership decisions for the London team and coordinate with Cyprus

Key requirements

• Designed backend systems from scratch with documented trade-offs
• Real-time systems experience at consumer scale
• Several years of people leadership with hiring/firing responsibilities
• Based in London with visa sponsorship available
• Willingness to travel regularly to Cyprus
