Kite Mortgages is a specialist mortgage broker for City professionals, and the firm is growing. We are looking for an organised, capable person with real mortgage case experience to work alongside our director, David Walsh, and to run the day-to-day of the practice: his diary, his inbox, the caseload, and the many small things that keep a small firm running well.
This is a new role, created for the firm’s next phase. Over the next few years we will add advisers, clients and moving parts, and it suits someone who wants to help build a firm rather than simply keep one ticking over.
Salary, hours and location
- £40,000 to £45,000 depending on experience
- Full-time, or around 30 to 32 hours across five days for the right person: the role needs someone in every working day, but not long ones
- Office-based in Canonbury, N1 (Leroy House, 436 Essex Road), with a home day by arrangement
- 28 days’ holiday including bank holidays, and a workplace pension
- Starting as soon as you are able, ideally before the end of the year
About Kite Mortgages
We work with lawyers, investment bankers, private equity and hedge fund professionals, traders and senior tech leaders, structuring mortgages around complex income such as bonuses, RSUs, carried interest, partnership drawings and foreign currency. We are a small, friendly team with a strong reputation in that market. The firm runs on Smartr365 and Concert Hub, and is an appointed representative of The Openwork Partnership. The role reports directly to David, and you would work closely with our client services coordinator and our senior adviser.
What the role involves
- Inbox: managing David’s inbox, separating what needs his attention from what can be handled, delegated or filed
- Case updates: taking over the case correspondence he is copied into, and giving him a short daily summary flagging only what needs him
- Diary: owning his diary, keeping first client meetings to two days a week and protecting the rest for the work that grows the business
- Client preparation: ahead of remortgage conversations, pulling the client’s current position from the lender portal and an automated valuation from Hometrack
- Client queries: answering routine client questions yourself, and doing some early fact-finding so that cases arrive further along
- Case work: keying mortgage and protection applications, downloading forms, uploading documents, producing illustrations and writing up files for compliance
- Practice administration: payslips, publishing case studies and articles on the website, thank-you gifts for clients, and arranging and minuting meetings with lender BDMs
Where the role goes
The first three months are about getting to know David, the clients and the systems. After that, the practice manager side grows. Working with David and our senior adviser, you would take on:
- The operations handbook: we are writing down how Kite Mortgages works. David and our senior adviser decide what good looks like; you would keep it current, notice where practice has drifted from the page, and make sure it is used
- Standards and reporting: measuring what matters, such as turnaround times, enquiries, referrals and handovers, and giving David one clear page a month
- Team logistics: rotas, holidays and cover, and the practical side of recruiting and onboarding new advisers
- Projects: when something needs building or changing, running it through to completion with owners and dates
You do not need to have done all of this before. David will build the first of it with you, and the firm will fund a place on the Openwork Business School’s Operations for Excellence programme, a six-month course for practice managers, once you have settled in.
Who we are looking for
- Solid mortgage experience: at least two years’ hands-on case work at a broker or lender, enough to know what a case needs and what is urgent. Essential.
- CeMAP or CII CertMA: preferred but not required. If you do not have it and want it, the firm will fund the study and the exams.
- Highly capable: organised, on top of the detail, and trusted to get on with things without being chased
- Proactive: you see what needs doing and do it, and you like taking work off other people’s plates
- Good judgement: much of the job is deciding what is urgent, what can wait, and what needs David
- Calm with a lot on, trustworthy and discreet
- Willing to hold a standard: as the role grows, you will be the person who notices when something is not being done the way we agreed, and says so, courteously and to anyone
